Top Teams in NCAA Men’s Basketball

As the end of the season approaches, teams are scrambling to get ranked in time for the tournament. A lot of movement happened in the last week alone. Four teams ranked inside the top 10 lost games, causing some interesting changes. Houston moved up from No. 5 to No. 3, Arizona moved from No. 8 to No. 5, and UNC dropped from the No. 3 spot all the way to No. 7.

Rank           Team                          Odds to Win NCAA Tournament

No. 1      Connecticut Huskies                 +650

No. 2      Purdue Boilermakers               +650

No. 3      Houston Cougars                      +900

No. 4      Marquette Golden Eagles        +2500

No. 5      Arizona Wildcats                      +1200

No. 6      Kansas Jayhawks                      +2000

No. 7      North Carolina Tar Heels          +1600

No. 8      Tennessee Volunteers              +1400

No. 9      Duke Blue Devils                      +3000

No. 10    Iowa State Cyclones                 +2500

Connecticut Huskies

The reigning champs are back on top of the AP Poll and have a 20-2 record with twelve wins in a row. As they did last week, they received 45 points again this week to stay in first place. Purdue received 16 points. No other teams received first-place votes.

Purdue Boilermakers

The Boilermakers have been stuck at the No. 2 spot for five weeks since their last loss. They have won eight straight games, averaging 86.5 points per game with a victory margin of 15.9 points, and are wondering what it will take to regain that No. 1 spot – probably a loss by the Huskies.

Last year, they won the Big Ten Conference Tournament title but lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. They are still led by 7′ 4″ senior Zack Edey, who’s had 13 games with at least 20 points and ten rebounds this season. They hope to bury last year’s disappointment by going much farther this year.

Houston Cougars

With their comeback win against Cincinnati, the Cougars maintain first place in the Big 12 standings. Several sports critics are projecting the Cougars to be the No. 1 seed in the South, going up against a 16-seed, which could be Southern, Eastern Kentucky, or Green Bay. They’ve already beaten No. 6 Dayton and No. 10 Texas A&M and have remaining games against Texas, Iowa State, Baylor, and Kansas.

Marquette Golden Eagles

The Eagles might be No. 4, but the sportsbooks aren’t convinced. Marquette’s odds of winning the NCAA tournament sit at a long +2500, while No. 5 Arizona sits at +1200. If your players like Marquette, they might want to jump on these odds before they change. The team is on an eight-game winning streak, including five on the road in conference play, but they’re still two games behind first-place UConn in the Big East standings.

Arizona Wildcats

The Wildcats survived a three-overtime game against Utah last Thursday and then crushed Colorado on the road, 99-79. They have won five in a row and seven of their last eight, which is why they leap-frogged over Kansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee in the rankings. This Saturday, they take on their in-state rival, Arizona State.

Arizona is 10-3 in Pac-12 play and only a game ahead of second-place Washington State Cougars. These top two teams are the only ones in the conference receiving top 25 votes, but the Cougars are still five positions out of the top 25.
