Bayern vs Tottenham: A Shared History of Iconic Matches & Transfers
This will not be the first time the two clubs have faced each other. Most recently, on August 10, 2024, Bayern Munich beat Tottenham 3-2 in a friendly match, with goals from Dayot Upamecano, Serge Gnabry, and Thomas Müller for the German side, and a brace from Dejan Kulesevski for the Spurs. Their most memorable UEFA Champions League clash saw Munich win 7-2 in the 2019/20 season, followed by another 3-1 victory in the second leg. Their first-ever encounter dates back to the 1982/83 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, where they drew 1-1 in the first leg before Bayern won 4-1 in the second.
But their relationship goes beyond soccer and gets into business. In the past years, a close relationship has developed between the two clubs. One of the most important transfers in the European window was the Harry Kane transfer to Bayern Munich, after he left the Spurs, leading the club as the All-Time scorer with 21 goals despite no trophy achieved. Another figure that was transferred to the German club was Eric Dier, and most recently, Mathys Tel was given a loan to the British club, and also the Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha, who came to provide some illusion to the Spurs fans after the departure of another one of their legends, the Korean Son Heung-Min as well as the absent of James Maddison due to his severe injury.
Team Form & Pre-Season: How Bayern and Tottenham Are Preparing
Tottenham Hotspur is coming off a very particular season where they finished 17th in the Premier League but also won the UEFA Europa League against Manchester United—their first major trophy since the 90s. In this strange combination of results, manager Ange Postecoglou was subsequently fired. Spurs will now face Champions League winners PSG in the UEFA Super Cup on August 13 at Italy’s Stadio Friuli, before hosting Burnley for their 2025-26 Premier League opener.
Meanwhile, the German champions, Bayern Munich, appear to be in good form after a decent Club World Cup and are preparing to compete for another trophy in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, also known as the German Supercup, against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday, August 16. The latest positive development for the Bavarian club is the acquisition of the Colombian striker Luis Díaz from Liverpool, who’s eager to play his second match after the win over Olympique Lyon 2-1.
